El verbo to fear es formal, sobre todo con complemento sustantivo o verbal (I f. the dark, temo la oscuridad; I f. to tell her, temo decírselo) y se suele sustituir por to be afraid/frightened (to + inf o of + ...ing). Asimismo se dice a veces I fear that..., me temo que..., pero hoy en día se prefiere to be afraid (that).
