must
[m | st] 1 v aux - deber, tener que: it must be pointed out that..., hay que señalar que...; you m. stop smoking, debes dejar de fumar - (probabilidad) deber de: she m. be crazy, debe de estar loca; they m. have gone home, han debido de volver a casa | 2 n fam necesidad
Must expresa una obligación fuerte y suele implicar alguna autoridad por parte del hablante (un médico, un profesor, etc.). Por tanto, en el contexto normal puede sonar algo fuerte y generalmente se prefiere emplear to have to.
Must va seguido de infinitivo sin to: You must help me. Tienes que ayudarme. Este verbo sólo existe en el presente y en otros tiempos hay que usar to have to: He had to go to work early. Tuvo que irse a trabajar temprano. We have had to dismiss several workers. Hemos tenido que despedir a varios trabajadores. You´ll have to work harder. Tendrás que trabajar más.
Recuerda que must not o mustn´t expresa una prohibición (you mustn´t smoke here, está prohibido fumar aquí), mientras que la forma negativa de to have to sólo significa que no estás obligado a hacer algo: You don´t have to answer my questions. No tienes que contestar a mis preguntas.
